Responding to the ecological, human and built patterns of a place to design purposeful landscapes.

Pattern is a landscape architecture practice led by Tash Burgess based in North East Victoria, delivering thoughtful, resilient landscapes for a range of clients. Pattern takes a practical approach that adapts to the scale, budget and goals of each project.

Process & Services

Every project is different, so depending on the project scale, goals and budget, I tailor the process to include some or all of the following stages.

Understanding your goals, budget and the site itself, including its climate, soils, ecology and planning constraints, gives the design a solid foundation.

Brief & Site Analysis

Mapping out zones, movement and how the whole site could work, with stakeholder input when the project calls for it.

Masterplanning

Your ideas take shape through layouts, sketches and imagery, along with broad material and planting directions that set the identity of the space.

Concept Design

I refine the concept into a design that works in practice, resolving materials and planting and checking everything against council and planning requirements.

Design Development

The approved design becomes clear drawings and specifications, so your project can be priced and built with confidence.

Construction Documentation

Where needed, I package the documentation for tender and help you review pricing, adjusting the design to suit your budget.

Tendering

As the build gets under way, site visits, plant selection and a final inspection can help the design intent carry through.

Construction Support

All project start with a conversation. Tell me about your site and goals, and I'll work out what's needed from there.

Who I work with

I work with a range of clients across a variety of project types, including environmental, residential, community, education, recreation and urban landscapes. My clients include councils, parks and wildlife organisations, education departments and private homeowners.

I often work alongside architects, engineers, environmental consultants, builders, landscapers and gardeners. I also collaborate with other landscape architects, providing drafting and documentation support or teaming up on larger projects.

Collaborative Communication

A transparent, responsive process, working directly with you from the first brief to the final drawing.

Context-Driven Design

Every layout responds to the site's broader context so the space feels authentic to its location.

Technical Rigour

Clear, detailed drawings that turn concepts into practical layouts, giving contractors a reliable basis for pricing and construction.

Scalable & Practical

The level of detail is matched to each project, from tender-ready documentation to a hand sketch and on-site chat.

About

My career began in outdoor education, moved into garden maintenance, and grew into design, with plenty of dirt under my fingernails along the way in land management, nursery production and market gardening roles. I have completed a Bachelor of Landscape Architectural Design and am registered with Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA). I have also completed a Permaculture Design course and integrate learnt principles into my work. In previous practices in Victoria and Tasmania, I've worked on projects across Australia, including MONA, 24 Carrot Gardens and the Rutherglen Loops Rail Trail.

Whether you’re shaping a back garden, a community space or a larger site, I’d love to hear about it.

Let’s Work Together

Have a site or project in mind? Tell me a little about it and I'll get back to you to talk through what's needed.
